Powieść Frankenstein, napisana przez Mary Shelley, została opublikowana w 1818 roku w Anglii. Akcja powieści osadzona jest pod koniec XVIII wieku w Europie i na Oceanie Arktycznym. Robert Walton, odkrywca i kapitan statku, poszukując przejścia na Biegun Północny, natrafia na ocalałego, który utknął na lodzie, nieznajomy okazuje się być Victorem Frankensteinem. Kiedy bohater dochodzi do siebie, opowiada niesamowitą historię o dziele swojego życia, które okazało się jednocześnie największym i najstraszliwszym czynem, jakiego kiedykolwiek dokonał. Frankenstein stworzył w swoim laboratorium istotę ludzką, jednak jego eksperyment kończy się tragicznie – w miejsce idealnego człowieka powstaje potwór, który, choć inteligentny, nie jest w stanie odnaleźć się w otaczającej go rzeczywistości. W imię zemsty potwór prześladuje swojego stwórcę, w wyniku czego doprowadza do śmierci najbliższych Frankensteina, a także samego Wiktora.

The novel Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley, was published in 1818 in England. The plot of the novel is set in the late eighteenth century in Europe and on the Arctic Ocean. Robert Walton, an explorer and captain of a ship, while searching for a passage to the North Pole stumbles upon survivor stranded on the ice, the stranger turns out to be Victor Frankenstein. When the hero recovers, he tells incredible story about the work of his life, which turned out to be both greatest and most terrible deed he has ever done. Frankenstein created a human being in his laboratory, but his experiment ends tragically - in place of an ideal human a monster is created that, although intelligent, is not capable of finding himself in the surrounding reality. In the name of vengeance, the monster haunts his creator, as a result of which he leads to death of Frankenstein’s loved ones, as well as Victor himself.
